Sleeping With Dogs

Out of U.C. Davis and the CA Dept. of Health has come a
recent study by two individuals that has the whole
countrytalking about whether it’s “safe” to allow our
dogs to sleep in bed with us. Interestingly, the study,
which concludes on a negative note, fully admits it’s
only in ”rare” and even “unusual” cases where someone
actually became ill as a result of regularly snuggling in
bed with their pet, and even in those cases, the
animal cited was so obviously ridden with parasites as
to be rendered unhealthy himself.  So what are the
“risks” for most of us in sharing our sleep with our
reasonably clean and well cared for canines?
I’m here to tell you that I’ve been doing it for well
over six decades with absolutely NO ill effects
whatsoever!

As a kid, it was my job to take care of my dad’s kennel
dogs.  As a dog trainer for Hollywood films and
television, Dad typically kept around thirty dogs on the
property.  With that number of pets, we didn’t live close
in to town, so rather than having neighborhood kids for
playmates, my best buddies were the dogs I cared for and
grew up with.  Each day I chose a different one to anoint
as “dog of the day”, and every one got their turn spending
extra hours of “individual time” with me, including
crawling into bed with me at night.  Being that my two
siblings both were several years older than I was, and
most often involved in their own pursuits, I viewed the
dogs as my brothers and sisters — the family members
who were always there for me. Looking back, they were
also the only family members from whom I never once
caught a cold, got into an argument with, or shared
anything but the warmth and trust of a loyal friend.

It concerns me that such an offbeat study like this is
actually being published by the CDC and enjoying so
much national attention.  We have a sinister element in
our society spending far too much money and energy to
convince the public, the lawmakers, and now the medical
industry that people just shouldn’t have dogs!  They want
to make it illegal if someone doesn’t prefer to cut out their
dog’s reproductive organs; render it “suspicious” if
someone chooses to own multiple pets; and now
determine it “unhealthy” if someone wants to sleep at
night with their own dog!  I’m not sure where all of this
is heading, but I am sure it’s not heading anywhere I
want to live.

Domestic dogs have been a part of human society since
before Bible times, and even the Bible mentions little
dogs eating food that falls from the table showing that,
even then, they were part of the household.  The
aboriginal people in Australia have long used the term
“three dog night” to indicate a night so cold that the usual
one dog under the sleeping blanket would not be enough
to keep a person warm in bed.  Thankfully for them no
one ridiculously accused them of being “hoarders” for
their owning of multiple pets, or charged them with
living in an “unhealthy” situation for bringing their
beloved dogs into bed with them to keep warm.

Growing up with dogs is something I consider to be just
about the most healthy part of my upbringing.  I intend to
continue owning dogs, and encouraging others to own
dogs, as well – yes, even multiple dogs! If you own a
number of dogs and a big enough bed to hold all of you
at night, I suspect you’ll enjoy much better sleep and a
much healthier life than anyone focusing their efforts on
doing away with dogs and the people who love them.
To all of my dog loving friends and fans, I wish you
a long healthy life of three dog nights!

    Bob,
You are so right. I too have had dogs most of my life and have shared my bed and home with them. I have not became sick from any of them. As you said it the dog is healthy and well cared for then there should not be a problem. I agree with you that the money being spent to destroy pet ownership would be better off being spent on something worth while. In example feeding the hungry or assisting the elderly to be able to buy medicine. Not in attempting to make this a communist style state where we are told everything and have no choices. What is happening to the American Freedoms and ways that you and I served to protect?????

Whenever I see I study like this relating to the companionship of dogs and any negative connotation of having them, you can pretty well be assured the people doing the study and interpreting the results have NEVER had dogs as part of their family. It is a common thread with these studies and total nonsense. Obviously, the University, even during these times, seems to have money to burn to implement this drivel. If there is any concern at all about this, having your pet immunized and taken care of on a regular basis would negate any of these so-called “issues”.

We have had multiple dogs in our family for decades and I guess, theoretically, according to this, I should be critically ill or dead by now.
I turned 65 this past year and quite healthy.

I read this and laughed; what a crock! Nope, sorry, always slept with my dogs and always will.

It is very discouraging that the veterinarian that heads the Veterinary Dept under the Ca Health Dept was seemingly in agreement with this perceived health risk. Our tax dollars pay his salary and his dept. and I think better time can be spent than giving weight to anti-pet propaganda. Furthermore, its doubtful this vet or the CDC take into account the major benefits dogs provide to their owners including less stress, an overall healthier outlook on life, less depression in the elderly, seizure alert dogs, service dogs, and yes, even those that actually have a wonderful lifestyle because they own a dog such as hiking, camping, dog competition events like agility and frisbee contests to name but a few. And what about the millions of families and senior citizens that are safe in their own homes because they have a dog? This bashing of pet ownership MUST STOP. That means YOU & I must draw the line here and now and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, especially when our own tax dollars are paying for such drivel. Mr. Weatherwax, thank you for a great down-to-earth response from someone who REALLY knows the true worth of one of God’s greatest gifts to man —

      Well written Dianne.
We live in a Senior Community and the benefit to those owning and properly caring for their “dogs” is huge.
But as a note of caution to the Senior set, be sure to make arrangements for your Best friend to be properly cared for if you become infirmed.

This ‘study’ is a prime example of JUNK SCIENCE. Animals as it was previously stated, if well cared for, do not harbor all these so called ‘pathogens’ that are ‘detrimental’ to human health.

My dogs always shared my bed and the only problem I ever had was if one of them happened to get sick in the middle of the night. Then there is this thing called a washing machine, that removes the problem.

I KNOW that more people get sick from all the damn chemicals they use that wind up on the animal, then the animal itself.

What about the parasites that humans transmit to each other? They always blame the defenseless animal!

You have to remember that these groups are paying big grants to the people that are doing the research. And they sure are not going to bite the hand that bribes them………

  7. Michelle Hann Says:

Bob, I agree with you. I have always had my dogs sleep with me. They are a part of the family. Another waste of money.

  8. Lance Says:

Goes to show, there’s more dollars than sense out there…
Anybody want to write a grant? I have plenty of goofy ideas!

  9. Leslie Says:

I love my dogs….I have slept with Norwegian Elkhounds, German Shepherds, Dachunds, Beagles, a Scottie, a Boxer, many mutts, and now a Yorkie Poo. This dog sleeps between my husband and myself and he has to touch each butt….(we sleep butt to butt and he is right between)….I have a bad nights sleep when we are out of town and I don’t have my “little furry” keeping my butt warm! LOL

  10. Wanda Isbill Says:

Wow…what a crock. I have always slept with my dogs and have YET to catch anything from them. Right now I have a Doberman that sleeps under the covers with me because she is cold-natured! AND…she sleeps nestled/curled right behind my knees or against my lower back. I wish they’d take all these ridiculous ideas and give the money for them to genetic research on animals so we can rid them of some of the terrible diseases/defects that occur.

  11. Kevin Monceaux Says:

    Bob,

I envy your childhood. My mother has a strict “dogs belong outside” policy. I had a few dogs while growing up but my parents always seemed to find a reason to get rid of them. And, being a computer geek I spent a lot of time inside and never bonded with them like I should have.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. The only phrase I’d change would be “if someone chooses to own …” The term owner grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalk board. My pack members are part of my family, not property. They’re my dogs, and I’m their human.

I’ve made up for my limited childhood canine interaction as an adult. At one point I had thirteen dogs. They wouldn’t all fit at one time, but they were all welcomed on/in my bed. With old age, etc., I’m down to seven dogs now. Most of my current pack members are older and can’t jump up on the bed like they used to.

I’ve looked at some of the steps, etc., available for helping dogs get on beds and things, but most I’ve seen are too small for Collies. I’d be especially worried about someone trying to climb down in the middle of the night when it’s dark. I’d hate for them to miss a step and fracture something important.

  12. Isabella Labrador Says:

My mom says she’s rather get fleas from all of us Labradors…..we don’t have any……than any diseases she can get from sleeping with a human !!!!

Seriously, just another study to justify another salary and existence for some government funded orgaization…..i used to work on Capitol Hill…..lol

Mom says she has slept with her pet companions her whole life….and that’s a loooooonng time…with no adverse reactions……….in fact….she would venture to say that this way of existence has extended her life for many years due to the joy, contentment and good chemicals released in her blood because we are with her!!

Enough already….let’s worry about the crime, homelessness, the state of our economy, our world…..not whether our dogs are making us sick if they sleep with us……..spend our tax dollars on these issues !!!!

    Bark Out Loud!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Diane Amble Says:

    Thank you Chuck!
